Bangladesh's Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned and left the country.
Facing a one-point demand from the anti-discrimination student movement for the government's resignation, Sheikh Hasina has resigned from her position as Prime Minister. After resigning, at around 2:30 PM, a military helicopter departed with Sheikh Hasina. Her younger sister, Sheikh Rehana, was with her. It has been reported that the helicopter left for India.
Sheikh Hasina, the President of the Awami League, took the oath as Prime Minister for the fourth consecutive time on January 11 of this year. Earlier, in 1996, she served as Prime Minister through the seventh national parliamentary election. She became Prime Minister again after winning the ninth national parliamentary election under the military-backed caretaker government in 2008.
The tenth parliamentary election in 2014 was one-sided, as the opposition parties did not participate. The eleventh national parliamentary election in 2018 was also controversial, with widespread allegations of ballot-stamping the night before the election. This election became known as the 'nighttime vote.'
In January of this year, she became Prime Minister again through the twelfth national parliamentary election, which was also controversial. The major opposition parties did not participate, and dummy candidates were fielded by her party leaders for a 'dummy competition.' The opposition labeled this election as a 'dummy election.'
Six months later, facing widespread student and public protests, she has resigned today and left the country by helicopter.
