Queens Constituents Call on Rep. Meng to Demand a Ceasefire in Gaza

QUEENS, NY – On Friday, November 24, over 200 concerned constituents gathered outside Rep. Grace Meng’s Flushing office to urge her to join the growing chorus of voices calling for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza. The current ceasefire, which went into effect earlier that morning, was already violated by Israeli airstrikes as Gazans attempted to return to their homes in northern Gaza. The death toll in Gaza has now surpassed 15,000 Palestinian lives. Despite the escalating death toll, Rep. Meng has yet to join the 44 Congressional Representatives and 3 Senators who have called for a ceasefire.

Calling out Israel’s war-crimes is NOT anti-Semitic:AMP

American Muslims for Palestine (AMP) has expressed its deep concern over recent Senate resolutions that aim to condemn antisemitism. The organization emphasizes that while they unequivocally condemn all forms of hatred, including antisemitism, they believe that the language and framing of these resolutions present a one-sided narrative that could stifle critical discourse about Israel's actions and policies. AMP is worried that this one-sided approach may contribute to Islamophobia and Palestinephobia.

New York City Faces Alarming Surge in Hate Crimes

Authorities Struggle to Curb Disturbing Trend as Community Concerns Mount. In recent months, the bustling metropolis of New York City has witnessed a distressing upsurge in hate crimes, leaving residents and officials deeply troubled. The alarming spike in these targeted acts of violence has sparked outrage and concern, raising questions about the city's ability to ensure the safety and security of its diverse population. Statistics released by the New York City Police Department (NYPD) indicate a significant increase in reported hate crimes across all five boroughs. These heinous acts, motivated by prejudice and discrimination, target various marginalized groups, including but not limited to racial, ethnic, religious, and community groups. The rise in such incidents has sent shockwaves through the city, which prides itself on its reputation as a melting pot of cultures.

WUST's convocation held in Virginia

Graduated students at Washington University of Science and Technology received a letter of greetings from former US President Bill Clinton. This graduation ceremony was on Saturday, June 17—class of 2023. Dressed in gowns and hats, students participate in the graduation parade and accept the graduation certificate. Seventy-six students at the university received this convocation.

Nusrat Choudhury is the first Muslim woman to be appointed as a federal judge

President Biden chose Nusrat Jahan Choudhury to be a federal judge in New York. On Thursday, the Senate agreed, making her the first Muslim woman to serve on a federal bench. Choudhury will serve the Eastern District of New York in Brooklyn. He is also the first Bangladeshi-American to be approved as a federal judge.

Zakat Foundation Awarded 25 Organizations in New York

Zakat Foundation of America has awarded the Community Achievement Award to 25 organizations in New York. Recognizing their exceptional contributions during the COVID-19 pandemic and global natural disasters, these community organizations are being honored and acknowledged. The 'Quran Night and Community Achievement Award' event, organized by the Zakat Foundation of America, took place at the Hillside Islamic Center on Friday. The foundation's Regional Manager, Imran Ansary, and Director of Religious Affairs, Ibrahim Aldardashti, presented this recognition to the selected organizations. In addition to their remarks, the Executive Director of Yakat Foundation of America, Halil Demir, Executive Committee Chairman of Hillside Islamic Center, Kalim Hussein, and President of Jamaica Muslim Center, Dr. Siddiqur Rahman, spoke at the event. The program began with a recitation from the Quran by prominent reciters Sheikh Ibrahim Aldardashti and Qari Nazrul Islam, creating an atmosphere of spirituality.

Kazi Fouzia Awarded for Community Organizing

Kazi Fouzia has been honored for his work on behalf of the immigrant community in the United States for more than a decade. She is the organizing director of Desis Rising Up and Moving (DRUM). Shahana Hanif, a New York City Council member, gave Kazi Fouzia a signed proclamation at a small event in Brooklyn on Wednesday evening. 

Muslim community under fear after the killing of Sayed Faisal by police in Boston

A man's family and friends gathered on Thursday to protest and demand details about the deadly altercation with Cambridge police.

At UMass Boston, Sayed Faisal, 20, was a junior. People who knew him stated he lived in the vicinity, worked at a CVS, and had recently relocated with his family from Bangladesh.

Mayors declared extra budget for Halal food in the NYC school

New York City Mayor Eric Adams and New York City Department of Education Chancellor David C. Banks today announced the expansion of the Cafeteria Enhancement Experience (CEE), as part of the city's reimagining of the student dining experience and city's ongoing commitment to health and nutrition. With an additional $50 million in capital funding in Fiscal Year 2023, the CEE initiative will transform more than 80 cafeterias into warm and welcoming spaces for students to enjoy nutritious meals.
