Bangladeshi American Fazlul Kabir was elected the first Muslim mayor of College Park City, Maryland. Kabir was ahead by more than 500 preliminary votes on Thursday, preventing any other candidate from catching up. Final numbers released Friday confirmed Kabir’s victory with 1,008 votes. District 1 council member Kate Kennedy won 469 votes, Mayor Pro Tem Denise Mitchell won 354, and single-issue candidate Bryan Haddad won 19.
Bangladeshi American Dr. Nina Ahmad has announced her run for the post of 'Council at-Large' of the City of Philadelphia in the United States.In the 2020 Dr. Nina could not win the post of Pennsylvania State Auditor General as a Democrat candidate with 3.129 thousand 131 votes. Timothy Lionel DeFoor of the Republican Party won with 3.3 million 38 thousand 9 votes.
Originally designed to be a secular nation, not tied to any one holy book, the Constitution of Bangladesh was meant to establish a state based on a melting pot of liberal culture with Bengali-distinct linguistic traditions.
That goal was undermined, as is so often the case in fledgling states, through a military junta by Ziaur Rahman. Islam was then introduced as the state religion to dominate Hindus, Buddhists, and Christians using military dictatorships, established first in 1975.
Since 2016, voter registration among American Muslims increased from 60% to 81% by 2022. As the Muslim population continues to rise, its hoped this will spur better representation in government and the electoral system more generally.
