US, Bangladesh Leaders Affirm Strong Partnership and Support Reform Efforts

US President Joseph R. Biden and Bangladesh Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus have reaffirmed the robust partnership between Washington and Dhaka, underscoring shared democratic values and deep-rooted people-to-people connections. The leaders met on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, where President Biden welcomed further engagement between the two governments and pledged continued US support for Bangladesh's reform agenda, according to a White House statement. President Biden congratulated Prof Yunus on his recent appointment as the head of Bangladesh's interim government. Prof Yunus, a Nobel laureate, was sworn in as Chief Adviser on August 8, following the resignation of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina amid a mass student-led uprising.

New York City, NY – On Sunday evening, Times Square witnessed an unprecedented turnout as over 7,000 people gathered in a massive protest organized by the American Bangladeshi Empowerment Initiative. The event, which took place from 7 pm to 9 pm, was a show of solidarity with the student movement in Bangladesh, and it drew support from numerous organizations, including the South Asian Solidarity Foundation, the South Asian Policy Initiative, and the Human Rights and Development of Bangladesh.

Couched in diplomatic terms, the statement is highly critical of the recent US effort to push the government of Bangladesh to accept the popular demand for a free, fair and inclusive election. The statement praises the Sheikh Hasina government, “States like Bangladesh, which shape their foreign and internal policy to serve their own national interests instead of following the lead of external powers, take a similar approach”.
