Bangladesh's political crisis
UN Human Rights Urges Peaceful and Inclusive Environment Ahead of Bangladesh General Election
As Bangladesh prepares for its general election scheduled for January next year, the United Nations Human Rights spokesperson, Jeremy Laurence, has called on all political parties, their supporters, and security forces to ensure a peaceful, inclusive, and safe environment, allowing for a free and fair ballot.
In recent months, reports of recurring violence have marred opposition rallies in the country. Witnesses have observed the use of rubber bullets, tear gas, water cannons, and even brutal physical force by police and individuals dressed in plain clothing against protesters. The clashes have resulted in injuries to numerous opposition supporters and even some police officers. Shockingly, senior opposition leaders have been targeted, suffering assaults in broad daylight, and their homes subjected to raids by individuals claiming to be law enforcement personnel. Additionally, hundreds of opposition leaders and supporters have been detained both before and during the rallies.
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights office has issued a strong appeal to the Bangladeshi authorities, emphasizing the importance of upholding human rights obligations. The statement stresses that all citizens must be allowed to exercise their rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and freedom of opinion and expression without intimidation or suppression from any third party.
Mr. Jeremy Laurence has urged the Bangladeshi police to exercise utmost restraint and ensure that force is used only when strictly necessary, following the principles of legality, restraint, and proportionality. Any allegations of excessive use of force should be promptly and thoroughly investigated, with those responsible held accountable for their actions.
Furthermore, the spokesperson has called on the authorities to provide a safe and peaceful environment for all those involved in canvassing and political activities ahead of the upcoming election. Emphasizing the importance of political plurality and the expression of diverse views, Laurence highlights that these are fundamental rights that must be fully respected and protected.
The UN Human Rights spokesperson's appeal comes as the international community closely monitors the situation in Bangladesh. The success of the upcoming general election hinges on the creation of a democratic and peaceful atmosphere, fostering public trust in the electoral process.
The United Nations remains committed to supporting the country's efforts in maintaining human rights, promoting democracy, and ensuring the well-being of its citizens.
